    Penfield Lions Club Overview

We have our dinner meetings on the first and third Thursday of the month that include antics by our "Tail Twister" and a guest speaker that discusses timely, interesting local community topics. The business of the Club is conducted at a Board of Directors meeting that is held on the fourth Thursday of each month.

Our primary mission is tailored to the needs of Penfield.

In our community we have provided several eye exams and glasses for needy children and adults. We solicit old eyeglasses for reclamation and continuously solicit eye and human part donations.

Our sight activity has included the purchase of a number of Braille Writers that are on loan to volunteer transcribers. We support youth activities at the Batavia School for the Blind, the Association for the Blind of Rochester, Lions International "Sight First" Program and the Upstate Guide Dog Association.

In our early years we sponsored Harvest Queen Contests, purchased books and furniture for the Penfield Library, supported Summer Concerts and Wrestling Tournaments, and held a number of Glaucoma Detection Clinics.

We were a prime supporter of the creation of the "Lions" Pop Warner Football team, which now has a new name, and are staunch backers of the Penfield Little League Baseball Program. We also support High School Cheerleading programs.

In the seventies, we increased our handicapped involvement with the formation of a group called "The Friends of Frank" and provide support for Camp Smile and Camp Open Arms of Cancer Action.

Our environmental involvement has included building a Braille Trail along the Irondequoit Creek, and financial support for the Thousand Acre Swamp in Penfield. Our annual Environmental Clean-Up Day has expanded into a cooperative effort with other Penfield service organizations and has matured into a state wide Lions activity.

We also started local Bike Registrations, provided food and clothing for St. Joseph’s House of Hospitality, furnish large print Readers' Digest for local nursing homes and instituted an annual Christmas Party for the Hill Haven residents.

We built a cabin and provide other programs for the Empire Speech and Hearing Clinic at Ithaca.

We also started the Don Mack Scholarship fund and currently subsidize the "Lion's Quest" program to reduce substance abuse in our local schools. To provide an opportunity for young people to participate in service activities for Penfield, we initiated a Lion’s Leo Club in 2001 Penfield Leo Club.

In 2004, a Fine Arts Auction was held in March to benefit the Shepherd Home, a comfort care home, and our Penfield Food Shelf.

In the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, our fund raising involved window washer fluid sales, Pancake Breakfast with Santa, Charcoal and Chocolate Easter Bunny Sales, and food concessions at community events.

Recently we have held Monte Carlo/Vegas Nights, Rose Sales and raffles.

From 1982 to 1987, a Golf Tournament was held to raise funds for our handicapped support activities.

In 1985, we established a “Citizen of the Year” award that is presented to an outstanding local person, about once a year.

From 1976 to 2001 we sponsored a unique community service and fund raising activity called Penfield Country Fair Days that we held in September. We currently co-sponsor it in August with the Penfield Business Association and the Town of Penfield. In addition, we co-sponsor an annual community Christmas tree lighting in December.

In all cases 100% of the funds raised, in our events are used for community projects. Each Lion pays for dinners and all costs associated with the Clubs operating expenses.

The Charter President of the Penfield Lions Club was Fred Libby, succeeded by John Bundschuh, Fred Perucki, Tom Reynolds, Jim Franklin, Ron Keller, Don Libby, Dick Haines, Gene Walters, Bob Greco, Peter DuPre', Bob Blessing, Mike Salata, Ed Tamm, Don Cranson, Bob DuMond, Don Nickason, Bob Hurlbut, Milt Jones, Ralph Peek, Joe Giali, Dean Rose, Brian Barney, Charles Budd, Bill Kramer, Lou Trabalzi, Phil Schaefer, Ron Lockner, Enzo Lombardo, Jim Morrow, Rich Notargiacomo, Gary Hettrich, Randy Hooker, Paul Domagola, Jerry Poslusny, Mike Foy, Gary Hettrich and Doug Niblack. John Theuman is currently the President of our club. (08/01/07)
